Lake Raponda A1 Initiative

At the July 11, 2021 LRA meeting, Tom Laughlin introduced an opportunity for Lake Raponda to achieve a reclassification by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to A1 water quality level. His well summarized remarks are documented in this statement.

Oliver Pierson of the DEC has also provided two documents which Tom and the Lake Raponda Environmental Foundation have studied and vetted for several months before bringing this proposal to the LRA and watershed community. These are:

These documents supplement Tom’s summary and we hope they will stimulate questions and conversations that help our community determine what is in the best interest of Lake Raponda. Please take the time to read these documents.

Questions, comments and concerns can be sent to Ann Loughran at or Jack Widness at

The August 12 zoom call with Oliver Pierson, the DEC’s Lakes and Ponds Program Manager, is available here. The password is Ma&4GnY0.

This call provides background on how the A1 reclassification program would be a good fit for Lake Raponda and addresses questions and concerns from residents and stakeholders.

A survey to assess he community’s interest in pursuing A1 will be sent out by August 30th.
